How do I change my name in the government of India gazette?
There are various steps included. A. Make affidavit B. Down application form from Department of Publication website and fill C. Make CD D. Give name change advertisement in one National Newspaper. E. Pay Government Gazette Fee through Bharatkosh portal. F. Submit your file to department.
What documents are required for a name change in India?
ID of present name and present address proof. Then also submit Affidavit, application, CD, Newspaper, Fee receipt.
How long does the process of name change in India usually take?
Department says, 8 weeks is there time. But our experience shows that it take approximately 4 – 6 weeks to publish the Gazette.
Can I change my full name or just my first name through the gazette process?
You can change your First Name, Middle Name and Surname. Its upto you. However, the documentation varies depending on case.
Is there a specific format for applying for a name change in the government gazette?
Yes. You can download from the Controller of Publication website. Different formats for Minor and Adult.
What is the fee for changing a name in the government gazette in India?
Currently (September, 2024) the name change fee for Minor is 1700 and Adult is Rs. 1100/- However, I suggest you visit the department website for latest fee structure. Note for every alias name Rs. 250/- extra to be paid.
Do I need to advertise my name change in a newspaper as well?
Yes. It is mandatory. You have to advertise in one national newspaper in classified section.
Are there any restrictions on what new name I can choose for myself?
No restrictions.
Can minors apply for a name change in the government gazette?
Yes. We can apply for name change for minors. However, the applicant will be either Father, Mother or Guardian.
Is the name change process the same for all states in India?

What is the procedure for changing a name after adoption in India?
There is a separate form for name change after adoption. Download from Controller of Publication website. Complete the formalities and pay Fee. Submit application to department.

Yes. Copy of adoption, id proof of Biological and adopted parents is must.
Is there a specific timeline within which a name change must be requested after adoption?
No time limit. One can process any time. Better to do at the earliest.
Gender Change
What is the procedure for changing a name after a gender change in India?
Name change after gender change is called Public Notice in Gazette. Apart from standard documents and process, one has to obtain a certificate of SRS from a Surgeon or Psychologist.
